The Relationship between Weight Cutting and the Female Athlete Triad in Combat Sport Athletes

Background: Females combat sport athletes are likely to partake in rapid weight reduction strategies prior competitions. Objective: The purpose of this study was investigate the relationship between cutting habits female and risk developing athlete triad. Methods: 102 (amateur=40; professional=62; 28.8±4.5y), competing boxing (n=30), kickboxing (n=12), mixed martial arts (n=60), completed two questionnaires. An adapted version Rapid Weight Loss Questionnaire (RWLQ) used determine severity athletes’ behaviors, Low Energy Availability (LEAF-Q) triad risk. Data analyzed correlations LEAF-Q RWLQ scores along with behaviors. Scores were also compared competition level sports. Results: results showed that 38% at Significant correlation (p=0.013; r=0.244, r2=0.060) noted. A significant difference (p=0.006) amateurs professionals noted, engaging more severe behavior. Mixed artists reported highest scores, which significantly greater than boxers. No other behaviors Conclusion: Despite a small effect size (r²=0.060), findings demonstrate may increase among athletes.
